What is a pest? A pest is any organism that harms humans, other animals, or crops by spreading disease, causing injury, or by creating a nuisance. Pests include: insects, mice, weeds, fungi.

What is a pesticide?  A pesticide is a substance that controls a pest’s activity, repels, destroys, or prevents their ability to cause damage.

What methods does AMCD use to prevent mosquitoes from becoming a major problem in St. John’s County ?  AMCD combines many different methods of pest control, including application of pesticides, to prevent mosquitoes from becoming a major problem in our county.

·        Surveillance - AMCD monitors current mosquito populations by finding breeding areas, trapping adult mosquitoes, and responding to service requests from residents. We also ensure that the pesticides we are using are effective through resistance testing.

·        EDUCATION – AMCD provides workshops for community groups, schools, and our employees to ensure that current information about pest control is readily available. If your group would like to have an informational presentation about mosquito biology and control methods please contact us and we will arrange a presentation.

·        ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL – AMCD tries to control mosquito problems by eliminating the source of the mosquitoes. Sometimes this is as easy as turning over a bucket or by introducing some minnows to a drainage ditch.

·       PESTICIDE APPLICATION – AMCD uses two general types of pesticide, larviciding and adulticiding/fogging.

What is a larvicide? Is it harmful to us or other animals? Mosquitoes begin life in water, part of this life stage is known as the larval stage. A larvicide is a chemical that kills the mosquito at this life stage OR prevents the mosquito from becoming an adult. This kind of chemical is specifically targeted to mosquitoes and poses little to no harm to other organisms, including humans.

Is fogging harmful to humans or other animals? Adulticide or fogging is a pesticide that is used to kill the adult pest. AMCD uses ULV fogging to apply pesticides. All pesticides applied in the state of Florida have undergone strict testing by several government agencies such as the EPA and US Fish and Wildlife Service. Florida has some of the strictest laws in the world on the use and application of pesticides.

What is ULV fogging? ULV stands for ULTRA LOW VOLUME. The pesticide is combined with tiny drops of water and spread by a fog truck to kill the mosquitoes. Other than not smelling nice, fogging provides relief from mosquito pests.

Can AMCD do anything about midges? As a mosquito control district, our focus is on reducing and controlling the mosquito population in St. John’s County . Midges, also known as blind mosquitoes, are not biters. They emerge in giant swarms and are found near large bodies of water. To lessen the nuisance of midges when they are out in peak numbers, place an insect light (found at hardware stores) away from the home. Also, close blinds and curtains at night.

Can AMCD do anything about horse flies? Again, our focus is mosquitoes. Horse flies can be a serious nuisance and fierce biters. To protect yourself, use a repellant when outside that has DEET (being sure to read the label and follow all instructions on proper application). Also, wearing light colored clothing and avoiding areas where they are most prevalent.

Avian flu

The avian flu is a highly pathogenic strain of influenza that causes a high death rate among wild birds and poultry. AF can be passed on to humans via contact with saliva or feces. This virus is not easily transmitted from human to human but the concern is that someday the virus will mutate into a strain that is. Many Florida agencies are developing a coordinated response effort in case the avian flu should reach the United States.  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission monitors the mortality of wild birds and can be reported on their website:  www.myFWC.com/bird
