Integrated Pest Management

Integrated Pest Management is a combination of several pest management strategies – including community education, habitat management, chemical and biological control. Anastasia Mosquito Control District uses an Integrated Pest Management approach to protect the residents of St Johns County from mosquitoes.

Community Education is an important aspect of our mosquito control programs. We enjoy speaking to residents about mosquitoes and control methods. We give many presentations to schools, homeowner associations and at community events about mosquitoes.  Many mosquito problems around the home can be solved by residents when they know how and where mosquitoes breed. If you would like us to talk to your group, please call the main office to schedule an appointment.

Habitat Management can be as simple as dumping a container filled with stagnant water, draining a pool that is no longer in use or making sure that your gutters are not clogged.  At AMCD we focus on reducing breeding habitat whenever possible so that we can reduce the amount of pesticides used.

Chemical Control is another aspect of our IPM approach to mosquito control. AMCD uses two types of chemicals, larvicides and adulticides. The most commonly used larvicide at AMCD is a manufactured bacteria called Bti. This kind of bacteria destroys the stomach of mosquito larvae and is not harmful to other aquatic insects. Decisions to adulticide are based on strict criteria such as population surveillance and weather data. AMCD times all adulticiding activities so as to reduce harming non-target species.
