Arbovirus Surveillance
Sentinel Chicken Program
The purpose of the Sentinel Chicken Surveillance Program is to monitor the level of transmission of disease to the sentinel animals. In our program we use chickens because they are the safest sentinel to residents and workers. The chicken flocks are placed throughout the county and bled weekly from early spring until the end of fall. The arboviruses are present year round but only transmitted at certain times of the year. The blood is tested for virus at the state laboratory in Tampa and the results provide information about virus transmission levels.

Mosquito Pooling

The Mosquito Pool Testing Program tests the local mosquitoes for virus. Mosquitoes are trapped by dry ice baited traps at different sites around the county, identified to species and placed 50 mosquitoes per tube. This is a time consuming process because the specimens must be kept cold while being identified so that the virus can be preserved. The tubes are then sent to Tampa on dry ice where two different types of tests are performed to see if the mosquitoes are carrying virus.
