HOW TO PREVENT MOSQUITOES &

WEST NILE VIRUS

Recent rains encourage mosquito breeding and mosquito populations to increase. AMCD urges all residents to follow the “5 D’S” for prevention & protection:

Dusk and Dawn—Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are seeking a host ½ hour before and ½ hour after dusk and dawn.

Dress—Wear clothing that covers skin.

DEET—Use DEET repellents if you need to be outside at peak activity times. DO NOT use DEET on children less than 2 months old. Always read the manufacturer’s directions.

Drain—Remove all standing water in which mosquitoes can lay their eggs.

Screens—Keep windows closed or covered by screens at night.

TIPS FOR REMOVING BREEDING HABITAT

- Pour out any standing water

- Maintain swimming pools and Jacuzzis

- Maintain fountains in ornamental/fish ponds

-Remove leaves from gutters

-Prevent boats from collecting rainwater

-Empty bird baths and pet watering bowls weekly

-Turn over any buckets or cups not in use
